The time a cast has probably left you with a stiff, swollen and weak ankle, not to mention non-existent calf muscles.  

Of course, you never planned to slip on that rock, tumble down the stairs, take the wrong step on the sidewalk, fall from a horse, ________________ (fill in the blank). You’ve no idea how it happened…what you DO know is that, in one split second, everything changed for the worst.

You’ve probably spent the last few weeks in bed or on a couch wishing your time away, wondering when the nightmare is finally going to be over (if ever). 

You might be wondering if you’ll ever be able to walk normally again. Thinking about the next run, about putting on your favorite high heels, enjoying that family walk.

Right now your range of motion is nowhere near what it used to be.


You have trouble walking, pain, stiffness, you name it. Maybe you’re still in a cast, hoping and praying that, somehow, your ankle gets back to normal sooner rather than later.

I get it. I DO.

On the 31st of October 2012, my world was turned upside down when – I broke and dislocated my right talus bone during a rock-climbing accident.

My girlfriends drove me to the closest medical center. And, as I waited for the X-ray results, I still hoped that it would be nothing but a bad sprain. That a few days of rest would fix it. That everything would be okay in a couple of weeks’ time.

BUT just a few minutes later, the news came in… I’d fractured my ankle and would have to be transferred to the nearest hospital as a matter of urgency.

By the time I got there, I was tiredscared, and I was in so much pain that I begged the doctors to put me to sleep as they adjusted my ankle to 90 degrees and put a temporary cast on. Over the next 4 days – while lying in a hospital bed waiting for the doctors to decide on what to do next, I heard each and every one of the following predictions:

  • “Your ankle will never be the same again.”
  • “You will only regain 60% of the flexibility your uninjured ankle had.
  • “You’ll have serious trouble walking on uneven surfaces for the rest of your life.”
  • “You might walk with a limp for the rest of your life.”
  • “Brace yourself for arthritis – it’s really common with this kind of injuries.”
  • “Your talus bone might die off, and you might need extra surgeries that might or might NOT be successful.”


Heard it all before? I know how you feel.

Fast forward a couple of months later…

I was super frustrated as regaining ankle mobility & flexibility turned out to be a ridiculously slow process.

As the cast was removed and I got the green light for physiotherapy, I thought my ankle would be back to normal in weeks…

…but there I was – a few months into my ‘recovery’ – still limping , in constant pain, and unable to make it up a flight of stairs.

That’s when I started worrying that the doctors might be right, after all. That the rock-climbing, exercising, the days out hiking with my then-fiancé would be nothing but a distant memory from then on.

And, while each and every doctor’s prediction seemed to be consistently bleak, deep down I just couldn’t accept it.

I just knew there must be a way to recover fully, no matter how depressing the doctors’ diagnosis.

That’s when I decided to take my recovery in my own hands…

And I am so glad I refused to give up!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be full weight-bearing before I join IBFA?

Not at all. In fact, you can join and start performing the exercises as soon as you get the green light from your doctor to start moving your ankle again. The sooner you start with the exercises, the better for your recovery.

I'm already working with a physical therapist. Will I benefit from the program?

You might be surprised that 80%+ of the Iron-built Flexible Ankles members work with PTs and they still find the course extremely beneficial (and the same goes for their PTs, too!).

We asked them why they joined, and this is what they shared with us:

  • they  joined because the number of PT sessions were limited
  • they got a fair amount of exercises from their PTs, but they wanted more
  • they wanted all the support they could get to make their recovery as fast and easy as possible
  • they trusted Dr. Maya’s personal & professional experience
  • they wanted something to come back to over and over again EVEN after exhausting their course of PT sessions

Aren't the exercises I'm prescribed at physical therapy sufficient?

It really depends on how many exercises you get and how skilled your PT is. Sadly, most exercise programs are limited and, therefore, not very effective.

My doctor says I don't need physical therapy. Is this true?

No. Two of the most common pieces of advice doctors have shared with previous clients are: “Just walk on it. It will get better,” and “You can find a few exercises online, you don’t need a PT.”

Here’s the thing – walking on it is NOT going to cut it. In fact, if you don’t take care of ankle flexibility, strength, balance and correct technique, you’ll be setting yourself up for serious problems in future.

I actually agree with the second statement – to some extent.

In most cases, comprehensive courses like IBFA are all you need. However, if your recovery plan consists of 10 or 20 of the most common exercises you found on different websites, with no real understanding of how to use them correctly and in what progression,  you’re probably setting yourself up for a long and painful recovery journey.

It's been months since my accident. Will I still benefit if I join now?

Absolutely! Some of our members didn’t join the program until a couple of years after their injuries, and still saw a huge difference after performing the exercises in the course. There’s no cut-off date for a full and pain-free recovery!

I'm interested in the structure of the program. Can you share more?

Of course. Here’s what it looks inside:

Week 1: we start with 8 basic exercises.

Week 2: Add swimming pool exercises. Water takes the load off your ankle thus accelerating progress. If you don’t have access to a swimming pool, don’t worry – there are alternative exercises you can focus on instead.

Week 3: Test your flexibility, and focus on exercises designed to help you regain your range of motion, as well as strength in the muscles of your foot.

Week 4: Whether you like it or not, losing your balance is a lot more likely while recovering from an injured ankle. This week, we will address this challenge by adding balancing exercises to the mix.

Week 5: The result of weak arch muscles is a flat foot. A strong arch means better walking, as well as less problems with your ankles, knees, hips, back, and even neck.

Week 6: Want to be able to run again? In week 6, you will start performing exercises for stronger calf muscles – in 3 different variations.

Week 7: Stiff Achilles tendon? Don’t worry – you started working on better dorsiflexion in week 1. The two targeted exercises I share with you this week are designed to take it up a notch. You will also start improving inversion and eversion of your foot.

Week 8: This week’s exercises focus on ankle strength – whether you want to walk confidently again or start preparing yourself for a run, these exercises will take you there.

Week 9: This includes the last set of 9 exercises – everything from running exercises, to those aimed at improving your balance further, firing up intrinsic muscles of the foot, all the way to perfect plantar flexion.

All exercises range from beginners to advanced, thus giving you the opportunity to decide how much you want to challenge your ankle each day.

What if I'm unable to master all of the exercises in 9 weeks?

No worries! You have lifetime access, so you can take as long as you’d like.

In fact, you probably won’t master them in 9 weeks, and that’s okay!

I slowly included all these exercises into my routine over a period of 2 years, while other members master them within weeks, months or – in the case of some more advanced exercises – within a year or so. How long it will take you depends on a) your injury and b) how much time and energy you are able to invest in your recovery.

One thing is for sure – you can and WILL master them sooner or later.
